    SS Manchester Inventor (I) (1902 – 1917)

    The merchant British steamer SS Manchester Inventor was built in 1902 by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, Newcastle. At the time of her loss, she was owned by Manchester Liners Ltd.

    On 18 January 1917, on a voyage from St John, New Brunswick to Manchester, carrying general cargo, Manchester Inventor was captured and sunk by torpedo. She was lost 50 miles NW of Fastnet. The strike from a German U-boat captained by Carl-Siegfried Ritter von Georg thankfully took no lives.

  • Appeal over cook’s watch from torpedoed SS Athenia

    A museum which was gifted a watch, worn by a cook on the first British ship to be sunk by Germany in World War Two, is hoping to trace the seaman’s family.

    Sidney Worrall was badly injured in the attack on the Athenia in 1939, which killed 117 people, and passed his watch to a Canadian man, Gerry Hutchinson.
