    The British ocean liner, RMS Amazon, was built in 1906 by Harland & Wolff Ltd., Belfast. At the time of her loss 12 years later, the Amazon was under the ownership of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. Ltd., London.

  • On this day (13th March) WW1 Shipwreckollections

    SS Lisette (1899-1918)

    SS Lisette was a British steamer of 895 tonnes that was built in 1899 by S. McKnight & Co. Ltd., Ayr. The merchant ship was owned at the time of her loss by the Yorkshire Coal & Steam Shipping Co. Ltd., Goole.

    On 13 March 1918, the Lisette was travelling on a voyage from Goole to Honfleur with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Rudolf Stier. At time of the attack, the Lisette was located eight miles NExN from the Shipwash lightvessel.

    Sadly, one person lost their life.

    The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.

  • On this day (8th March) WW1 Shipwreckollections

    SS Madeline (1894-1918)

    SS Madeline was a British cargo steamer built in 1894 by Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool. In 1918, at the time of her loss during WW1, the Madeline was owned by Pyman, Bell & Co. Ltd., Newcastle.

    On 8 March 1918, SS Madeline was travelling on a voyage from Dieppe to Swansea in ballast when she was torpedoed without warning by a German U-boat under the command of Wilhelm Werner. The British steamer of 2,890 tonnes was sunk 14 miles ENE from the Pendeen lighthouse.

    Sadly, three lives were lost in the attack.

    SS Largo (1910-1918)

    The British cargo ship, SS Largo, was built in 1910 by S. P. Austin & Son, Ltd., Sunderland and at the time of her loss was owned by Pelton SS. Co. Ltd., Newcastle. She was a steamer of 1,764 tonnes.

    On 27 February 1918, whilst travelling on a voyage from Barry to Scapa Flow with a cargo of coal, the Largo was torpedoed without warning by a German U-boat under the command of Friedrich Strackerjan and sunk 12 miles West of Calf of Man.

    Thankfully, there were no casualties.
