SS Kalgan (1895-1918)

British passenger and cargo ship, SS Kalgan, was built in 1895 by Scott Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Greenock. During WW1, at the time of her loss, the Kalgan was owned by the China Navigation Co. Ltd., London.

On 6 March 1918, whilst travelling in ballast, the Kalgan was torpedoed without warning by a German U-boat under the command of Robert Sprenger. Due to the damage caused in the attack, the British steamer of 1,862 tonnes sunk 33 miles SW1/2W of Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Sadly, one person lost their life.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
