SS Jessie (1901-1917)

British cargo vessel, SS Jessie, was built in 1901 by Mcknight S. M. & Co., Ayr and was owned at the time of her loss by South Shield Steamship Co. Ltd., Grangemouth.

On 2 November 1917, the steamer of 332 tonnes was travelling on a voyage from Calais to Middlesbrough when she was captured by a German U-boat under the command of Otto von Schrader.

After calling at Bridlington whilst on passage, Jessie was attacked by gunfire whilst three miles north of Flamborough Head. The steamer attempted to make it to the shore but the repeated gunfire caused significant damage and the crew fled in two lifeboats.

Sadly, one of the lifeboats capsized, resulting in four of the crew losing their lives. The Jessie was beached but declared a total wreck.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
