Silver Medal & Barometer 1881/82

Society’s Silver Medal and Aneroid Barometer to James, Mace of the smack Acceptor of Grimsby, for rescuing the Captain and 18 crew of the Samarang of Newcastle ‘waterlogged’off the Dogger Bank on 15th October 1881.  Silver Medals and pecuniary award was also made to James Jamieson, the apprentice.

The following case of application for reward for saving life was then considered and decided as follows:-Grimsby. In case of the smack Acceptor of that port for rescue of the Captain (A Irvin) and eighteen of the sailors being all the crew of the Samarang of Newcastle, waterlogged off the Dogger Bank, on October 15th, 1881. To the Master of the smack, James Mace, the Society’s Silver Medal and pecuniary

Reward of £3 and to the apprentice, James Jamieson, the Society’s Silver Medal and pecuniary reward of £2, both of whom manned the smack’s boat effecting the rescue. Also to James Mace, was specially awarded one of the Marine Aneroid Barometers at the Society’s disposal for presentation in such instances.
