SS Plawsworth (1917-1918)

SS Plawsworth was a British merchant vessel built by Richardson, Duck & Co. Ltd., Stockton in 1917 and owned at the time of her loss by Dalgliesh Steam Shipping Co. Ltd., Newcastle. She was was a steamer of 4,724 tonnes.



On 13 July 1918, SS Plawsworth was travelling on a voyage from Newport to Genoa with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Franz Grünert. At the time of the attack, the Plawsworth was 105 miles WxN of Bishop Rock.

Sadly, one person lost their life as a result.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
