SS Suntrap (1904-1917)

British cargo vessel SS Suntrap was built in 1904 by the Sunderland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. At the time of her loss during WW1, the steamer of 1,353 tonnes was owned by Gas Light & Coke Co., London.

On 7 November 1917, the Suntrap was travelling on a voyage from Tyne to London, carrying 1,900 tonnes of coal in fine weather when she was attacked by torpedo from a German U-boat when two and a half miles east of South Cheek, Robin Hood’s Bay.

A fire broke out but thankfully all 19 of the crew made it off the Suntrap and were landed at Scarborough.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
