SS Parthenia (1901-1917)
SS Parthenia was a British cargo ship built in 1901 by Furness Withy & Co. Ltd., Sunderland. At the time of her loss a century ago, Parthenia was owned by the Donaldson Line, Glasgow.
On June 6 1917, Parthenia was on a voyage from New York to London, with general cargo, oats and steel, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Ernst Wilhelms. The steamer of 5,160 tonnes was 140 miles W by N of Bishop Rock at the time.
Sadly, three people lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
