SS Polbrae (1896-1918)
SS Polbrae was a British cargo ship built in 1896 by Neptun Werft A. G., Rostock. At the time of her loss in 1918, the steamer of 1,087 tonnes was owned by Seager W. H. & Co., Ltd., Cardiff.
On 4 May 1918, the Polbrae was travelling on a voyage from Cardiff to St. Malo with a cargo of fuel when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Franz Grünert. The Polbrae succumbed to the attack four-and-a-half miles off Bude.
Sadly, two lives were lost as a result.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
