The British Cargo Steamer, which weighed 8,762 tonnes was captained by Master James Wyper.

When travelling from the Clyde to Sicily, the steamer was torpedoed by German submarine, U-375 and sunk. The U-boat fired a spread of four torpedoes at the convoy, 10 miles north of Cape Tenez, Algeria. The master and 10 crew members were lost from a total of 180.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £75/19s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £ 3,829 today.
