SS Catford (1919-1943)
The SS Catford was built in 1919 and was owned by South Metropolitan Gas Co.
On 8th November 1940 the Catford survived a gunfire attack by German aircraft in the Thames estuary. The vessel also survived detonating a German mine, off Oaze Bank on the 26th January 1941.
On 31st May 1943 the coaster was on passage from London to the Tyne, when she foundered and was lost, after detonating a German mine off the Mouth of the Humber. The Master and four of the crew lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £119/17s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £5,089 today.
