SS Almora (1899-1917)
British cargo vessel, SS Almora, was built in 1899 by Henderson D. & W. & Co. Ltd., Meadowside. At the time of her loss a century ago, the steamer of 4,385 tonnes was owned by Houlder, Middleton & Co., London.
On 2 October 1917, the Almora was travelling on a voyage from Barry to Gibraltar with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Walter Forstmann. At the time, the steamer was 100 miles W1/2N of Cape Spartel.
Thankfully, there were no casualties.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
