SS Warnow was built in 1883 by John Readhead & Sons, Ltd., South Shields and at the time of her loss, during WW1, she was owned by James Mitchell & Sons, Dundee.

On 2 April 1917, the British steamer of 1,593 tonnes was on a voyage from Penarth to an unknown destination, with a cargo of railway material, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat. At the time of the attack, Warnow was six miles west of Trevose Head, North Cornwall.

Sadly, 14 people lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
