SS Barrwhin (1929-1942)
The SS Barrwhin was a British cargo ship. Built in 1929 by Greenock and Grangemouth Dockyard Co. Ltd. and owned by Sir Wm Reardon Smith & Sons Ltd., she was carrying 8,200 tonnes of grain and military stores at the time of her sinking on 29th October 1942 whilst in convoy from Halifax, Canada to London, UK.
Captained by Thomas Sydney Dixon, the Barrwhin was torpedoed by a German U-boat (captained by Günther Seibicke) and sank south of Iceland. Sadly, 24 people were lost at sea. All remaining survivors were rescued after eight hours by HMCS Kenogami, part of the Royal Canadian Navy, and transported to Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £188/5s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £8,559 today.
