SS Apapa (1914-1917)

SS Apapa was a defensively-armed British ocean liner built in 1914 by Harland & Wolff Ltd., Belfast. At the time of her loss a century ago, the steamer of 7,832 tonnes was owned by Elder Dempster Lines Ltd., Liverpool.

On 28 November 1917, the Apapa was travelling three miles NE of Lynas Point, Anglesey, on a voyage with a cargo of silver specie and ivory when she was targeted by a German U-boat and attacked by torpedo without warning.

Sadly, the sinking of the Apapa led to 77 of those on board losing their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
