SV Acorn (1864-1917)
The British merchant sailing vessel, Acorn, was built in Aberdovy in 1864 and owned at the time of her loss by Edward Maynard, Aberystwyth.
On 26 September 1917, the wooden schooner of 112 tonnes was travelling on a voyage from Granville to Cardiff in ballast, when she was captured and sunk by gunfire from a German U-boat under the command of Hugo Thielmann. At the time of the attack, SV Acorn was 20 miles SE from Start Point, Devon.
Thankfully, no lives were lost.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
