SS Matheran (I) (1906-1917)
British merchant steamer SS Matheran was built in 1906 by Harland & Wolff Ltd., Belfast. She was owned, at the time of her loss, by Brocklebank T., & J. Ltd, Liverpool.
On 26 January 1917, as Matheran approached Cape Town carrying a cargo of salt, industrial supplies, mail and racehorses, she was sunk by a mine from the prolific German raider SMS Wolf, nine miles West from Dassen Island. Sadly, one crew member was lost during the attack.
