SS Ilderton (1903-1917)
British cargo vessel, SS Ilderton, was built in 1903 by Ropner Shipbuilding & Repairing Co., Stockton-On-Tees. At the time she was lost, during WW1, the Ilderton was owned by Steel, Young & Co., London.
On 24 October 1917, whilst on a voyage from Arkhangelesk to Lerwick with a cargo of timber, SS Ilderton was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Leo Hillebrand. At the time, the steamer of 3,125 tonnes was 35 miles NE of Kildin Island.
Thankfully, there were no casualties.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
