SV Ruth Hickman (1917-1918)
Ruth Hickman was a British sailing vessel of 417 tonnes built in 1917 by Geo. W. Clarke, Springdale, Newfoundland. She was owned at the time of her loss by A.E. Hickman Co. Ltd., St. John’s, Newfoundland.
On 24 May 1918, Ruth Hickman was travelling on a voyage from Cadiz to St. John’s, Newfoundland with a cargo of salt when she was scuttled by a German U-boat under the command of Ernst Hashagen. At the time of the attack, Ruth Hickman was 60 miles NNW from Graciosa Island, Azores.
Thankfully, there were no casualties.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
