SS Birkhall (1900-1918)
British cargo vessel, SS Birkhall, was built in 1900 by Craggs, Robert & Sons Ltd., Middlesbrough, and at the time of her loss, the steamer of 4,541 tonnes was under the ownership of Holder, Middleton & Co. Ltd., London.

On 23 January 1918, the Birkhall was on passage from Salonika to Alexandria with a government cargo of military stores, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Hans Georg Lübbe. At the time of the attack, the Birkhall was located four miles SE of Cape Doro, Greece.
Sadly, two crew members lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
