SS Greleen (1894-1917)
British cargo ship SS Greleen was built in 1894 by Harland & Wolff Ltd., Belfast. At the time of her loss a century ago, the steamer of 2,286 tonnes was owned by the Haenton Steam Shipping Co., Cardiff.
Whilst on a voyage from Bilbao to Middlesbrough on 22 September 1917, with a cargo of iron ore, the defensively-armed steamer was was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat whilst seven miles E by N from Berry Head, Brixham.
Sadly, 19 people lost their lives as a result.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
