SS British Grenadier (1922-1941)
The SS British Grenadier was built in 1922 and captained by Master Henry George Jeary.
The unescorted steam turbine tanker was travelling from Abadan to London when, at 22.52 hours on 22 May 1941, it was torpedoed and damaged by U-103 southwest of Freetown. The tanker later foundered. The master, 22 crew members and two gunners were picked up by the Portuguese steam merchant Ganda and 24 crew members were rescued by the Spanish tanker Jose Calvo Sotelo and landed at Freetown.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £63/4s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £3,187 today.
