SS City of Lucknow (1917-1917)

British cargo vessel SS City of Lucknow was built in 1917 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool. At the time of her loss in the same year, during WW1, the steamer of 8,293 tonnes was owned by the City of Oran SS. Co., Ltd., Liverpool.

On 21 December 1917, the City of Lucknow was travelling on a voyage from Clyde to Calcutta with general cargo when she was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean. At the time, the steamer was positioned 50 miles NE of Cani Rocks.

Thankfully, there were no casualties.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
