SS Eurylochus (1912-1940)
The SS Eurylochus was a British cargo ship of 5,723 tons, which was torpedoed by German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran and sank west of Sierra Leone, on January 22, 1940.
38 of her crew were taken aboard of the raider, and remained as POWs until the end of the war. When they finally arrived home in the UK on 31 May 1945, after more than five years of incarceration, the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided seven of them with £59/6/6 worth of financial support, which is equivalent to almost £3,000 in today’s money.
