SS Carlyle (1901-1917)
SS Carlyle was a British steamer weighting 466 tonnes. She was built by Selby Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Selby in 1901 and owned at the time of her loss by Straits Steamship Co. Ltd., Liverpool.
On 2 January 1917, on a voyage from Manchester to La Pallice carrying general cargo, Carlyle was sunk by a German U-boat captained by Heinrich Küstner five miles WSW from the Île de Sein lighthouse, France. Luckily, there was no loss of life.
