SS Borga (1907-1918)
The SS Borga was a defensively-armed British merchant ship of 1,046 tonnes, built in 1907 by Nylands Mekaniske Verksted, Oslo. At the time or her loss 11 years later, the steamer was under the ownership of Mann, Macneal & Co., Glasgow.
On 1 March 1918, whilst travelling on a voyage from Swansea to Dieppe carrying a cargo of coal, the Borga was torpedoed and sunk without warning whilst nine miles S E by S from Beer Head.
Sadly, five of those on board lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
