SS Erviken (1921-1941)
The SS Erviken was a Norwegian cargo ship. Built in 1921 by William Doxford & Sons Ltd, her owner at the time of her sinking was Wallem & Co. Ltd. Erviken was captained by Paul Heesch and had a crew of 38.
On 17th October 1941 whilst en route from Tampa, Florida to Liverpool, UK, she was torpedoed by a German U-boat (captained by Günther Krech) and sank. At the time of her sinking, she was carrying a cargo of 9,300 tonnes of phosphate.
Sadly, 25 people were lost at sea with only 14 survivors.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £81/9s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £4,107 today.
