SS Polvena 1904-1917

British cargo vessel, SS Polvena, was built in 1904 by J. C. Tecklenborg, Geestemünde. At the time of her loss, the Polvena was owned by J. Herron & Co., Liverpool.

SS Polvena

On 17 October 1917, Polvena was travelling on a voyage from Beira to London with general cargo, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Hans Rose. At the time, the steamer of 4,750 tonnes was 25 miles NxE1/4E of Ushant.

Sadly, three people lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
