On this day (14th October) WW2 Shipwreckollections
MV Nikolina Matkovic (1919-1942)
The MV Nikolina Matkovic was a Yugoslavian cargo ship built in 1919 by Long Beach Shipbuilding Co. She was owned by Brodarsko Poduzece Eugen Matkovic between 1937 and her sinking in 1942.
Initially, the MV Nikolina Matkovic was built as an American steam merchant named Magunkook and was later renamed Carriso until she was sold in 1937, becoming the MV Nikolina Matkovic.
On 14th October 1942 whilst en route from Ciudad Trujillo to Liverpool via New York, she was torpedoed by a German U-boat (captained by Erich Von Lilienfeld). She was in convoy and was carrying lumber and sugar at the time of the tragedy that killed 14 people.
Interestingly, the U-boat responsible for the sinking herself sank just the next day, making the Nikolina Matkovic her first and last victim.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £95/10s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £4,342 today.
