On this day (13th July) – WW1 Shipwreckollections
FV Dalhousie (1886-1916)
The DV Dalhousie was built in 1886 by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd, and owned by George Alderson-Smith.
The fishing boat weighed 89 tonnes and was made out of iron. It was summonsed as an auxiliary troop transport for the British Expeditionary Force to Norway in the spring of 1940.
The Scarborough steam trawler Dalhousie was captured by a German submarine, captained by Werner Fürbringerand, on 13 July 1916. The trawler was sunk by a bomb placed below its decks, ten miles from Whitby. There were no casualties, but the ship has been missing ever since.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £17/5s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £ 1,769 today.
