SS Antigone (1928 – 1943)
SS Antigone was a British Cargo Steamer of 4,545 tonnes built in 1928.
On the 11th May 1943, when on route from St John and Halifax for Avonmouth and carrying 7,800 tonnes of grain, 255 tonnes of general cargo and 250 trucks, she was torpedoed by German submarine U-402 and sunk. Three crew members were lost from a total of 46.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £246/16s worth of financial support, the equivalent of £10,476 today.
