SS Aros Castle (1901-1917)
SS Aros Castle was a British cargo ship built in 1901 by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow. The steamer of 5,739 tonnes was owned, at the time of her loss during WW1, by the Union Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd., London.
On 21 November 1917, the Aros Castle was travelling on route to Baltimore from London, in ballast, when she was attacked by torpedo by a German U-boat. At the time, Aros Castle was 300 miles W by S of Bishop Rock.
Sadly, two of the crew lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
