SS Setter was a defensive-armed British passenger and cargo ship built in 1906 by Scott Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Greenock. At the time of her loss during WW1, the vessel was owned by Burns G. & J. Ltd., Glasgow.
SS Audax was a British cargo vessel built in 1903 by Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde – Royal Schelde, Vlissingen. At the time of her loss during WW1, she was owned by Carr L. S., Newcastle.
British cargo vessel, SS Arum, was built in 1914 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd., Wallsend.
To coincide with Merchant Navy Day (3rd September) and as we approach the centenary of the Armistice, national maritime charity, the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has produced a short video explaining that it’s due to the spirited determination and indomitable courage of the men of the Mercantile Marine and the Fishing Fleets that Britain wasn’t starved into surrender in World War One. It’s a story that’s seldom told.
