SS Hatasu (1917-1918)

SS Hatasu was a British cargo vessel built in 1917 by J. Blumer & Co., Sunderland and owned at the time of her loss by Moss SS. Co. Ltd., Liverpool. She was a British steamer of 3,193 tonnes.

On 27 September 1918, SS Hatasu was travelling on a voyage from Alexandria to Liverpool with a cargo of cotton, currants & onions, when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Adolf Ehrensberger. At the time, the British steamer was located 50 miles N3/4W from Oran.

Sadly, two lives were lost as a result.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
