SS Uganda (1898-1918)
SS Uganda was a British merchant steamer built by A. Stephen & Son, Glasgow in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by British India Steam Nav. Co. Ltd., Glasgow.
On 27 May 1918, Uganda was travelling on a voyage from Genoa to Gibraltar in ballast when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat under the command of Hans von Mellenthin. At the time of the attack, the British steamer of 5,431 tones was 90 miles northeast of Algiers.
SS Uganda finally sank two days later 40 miles off Algiers but thankfully there were no casualties.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
