SS Mavisbrook (1912-1918)
SS Mavisbrook was a British steamer built in 1912 by J. Blumer & Co., Sunderland. The merchant vessel was owned at the time of her loss by SS. Tregenna Co. Ltd. (Miller & Richards), Glasgow, and was a ship of 3,152 tonnes.
On 17 May 1918, the Mavisbrook was travelling on a voyage from Cardiff to Malta with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Franz Becker. The attack took place 50 miles SSEx1/2E from Cabo de Gata.
Sadly, 18 lives were lost as a result.
