SS Itinda (1900-1918)

The British steamer ship, Itinda, was built by WM. Denny & Bros., Dumbarton in 1900 and owned at the time of her loss by British India Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., London.

On 10 May 1918, whilst on a voyage from Syracuse to Alexandria with a cargo of government stores, SS Itinda was sunk by an Austrian submarine under the command of Hugo von Seyffertitz. The attack on the steamer of 5,203 tonnes took place 40 miles north from Marsa Sousah, Lybia.

Sadly, one life was lost as a result.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
