SS Agnete (1894-1918)

SS Agnete was a Danish steamer owned by The Shipping Controller, London, at the time of her loss during WW1. Built in 1894 by Howaldtswerke, Kiel, the Agnete was a cargo ship of 1,127 tonnes.

On 24 April 1918, SS Agnete was travelling on a voyage for Rouen from Newport with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat four miles SxW of Start Point.

Sadly, 12 lives were lost in the attack.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
