SS Yochow (1901-1918)

British cargo steamer SS Yochow was built in 1901 by Scott & Co., Greenock and owned at he time of her loss by the China Navigation Co. Ltd., London.

On 20 March 1918, the Yochow was travelling on voyage from Suez when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Gustav Sieß. At the time of the attack, the British steamer of 2,127 tonnes was located 54 miles N3/4E of Port Said.

Sadly, 50 of those on board lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
