SS Eleanor (1888-1918)

Built in 1888 by Edwards Co. Ltd., Howdon-On-Tyne, the steamship Eleanor was a British cargo vessel of 1,980 tonnes. At the time of her loss a century ago, she was owned by Screw Collier Co., Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

On 12 February 1918, the SS Eleanor was travelling on a voyage six miles SExE from St. Catherine’s Point when she was attacked by torpedo and sunk by a German U-boat.

Sadly, two lives were lost.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
