SS Ben Rein (1905-1918)

SS Ben Rein was a British merchant vessel built in 1905 by George Brown & Co. Ltd., Greenock. At the time of her loss during WW1, the Ben Rein was owned by the Ramsay Steam Ship Co. Ltd.

On 7 February 1918, whilst on a voyage from Liverpool to Belfast with general cargo, the Ben Rein was captured by a German U-boat under the command of Johannes Lohs, and sunk by gunfire. At the time of the attack, the British steamer of 212 tonnes was 35 miles NW from Liverpool.

Thankfully there were no casualties.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
