SS Normandy (1910-1918)

Built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1910, the British cargo and passenger vessel SS Normandy was lost during WW1 whilst under the ownership of the London & South Western Railway Co., Southampton.

On 25 January 1918, the Normandy was on a voyage from Southampton to Cherbourg with general cargo and mails, when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Walter Remy. At the time of the attack, the British steamer of 618 tonnes was eight miles E by N from Cape La Hague, France.

Sadly, 14 of those on board lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
