SS Kingsdyke (1888-1918)

SS Kingsdyke was a British cargo steamer of 1,710 tonnes that was built in 1888 by Schlesinger, Davis & Co., Newcastle. At the time of her loss during WW1, Kingsdyke was owned by Lowlands Steam Shipping Co. Ltd., Glasgow.

On 17 January 1918, the Kingsdyke was travelling on a voyage from Rouen to Cardiff in ballast when she was targeted and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Max Viebeg. At the time of the attack, the British steamer was located 20 miles NE3/4E from Cape Barfleur.

Sadly, 16 people lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
