SS Westlands (1905-1917)

SS Westlands was a defensively armed British steamer built in 1905. At the time of her loss, the cargo ship of 3,112 tonnes was owned by J. F. Wilson & Co., West Hartlepool.

SS Westlands

On 23 November 1917, SS Westlands was travelling on a voyage from Leith to Nantes when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sunk. At the time of the attack, the Westlands was positioned 10 miles North of Ile de Vierge.

Thankfully, there were no casualties.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
