On this day (9th November) WW1 Shipwreckollections
SS Ballogie (1889-1917)
SS Ballogie was a British merchant ship built in Sunderland in 1889 by Short Brothers Ltd. At the time of her loss 28 years later, the Ballogie was owned by Davidson J. & A. Ltd., Aberdeen.
On 9 November 1917, the Ballogie was travelling on Government service with a cargo of slag from Middlesbrough to Dunkirk when she was torpedoed without warning by a German U-boat. The steamer of 1,207 tonnes was struck three feet below the water line and the explosion was so severe it broke the vessel in half and caused the Ballogie to sink immediately, one and a half miles NE of Filey Brigg.
Sadly, the impact was so great, 13 people lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
