SS Toledo (1880-1917)
SS Toledo was a British passenger and cargo vessel built in 1880 by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow. At the time of her loss a century ago, the steamer of 1,222 tonnes was owned by Leith, Hull & Hamburg Line.
On 5 October 1917, SS Toledo was damaged by aircraft bombing and explosion. To prevent capture from Germans, she was scuttled at Goltern on Dago Island.
Thankfully, no lives were lost.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
