SS Kildonan (1898-1917)
British cargo vessel SS Kildonan, was built in 1898 by William Pickersgill & Sons Ltd., Southwick. At the time of her loss in 1917, the steamer of 2,118 tonnes was owned by John Cory & Sons Ltd., Cardiff.
On 29 September 1917, Kildonan, whilst on a voyage from Santander to Ardrossan with a cargo of iron ore, was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Karl Stöter. At the time of the attack, Kildonan was two miles NNW from the Pendeen lighthouse.
Sadly, 14 people lost their lives.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
