SS Gibraltar (1902-1917)

British cargo vessel, SS Gibraltar, was built in 1902 by Russell & Co. Ltd., Greenock and was owned at the time of her loss by Glen & Co. Ltd., Glasgow.

On 12 September 1917, the Gibraltar, a steamer of 3,803 tonnes, was travelling on a voyage from Karachi to Marseille with general cargo, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Gerhald Schulz. At the time, Gibraltar was 100 miles SE of Cape Creus.

Sadly, four people lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
