SS Llanishen (1901-1917)

British cargo steamer Llanishen was built in 1901 by Richardson, Duck & Co. Ltd., Thornaby and at the time of her loss during WW1, was owned by Evan Thomas, Radcliffe & Co. Ltd., Cardiff.

On 8 August 1917, the ship of 3,837 tonnes was travelling on a voyage from Savona to Mellila in ballast, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Gustav Sieß.

At the time of the attack, Llanishen was eight miles NE of Cabo Creus, Spain.

Sadly, two people lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
