SS Ruperra (1904-1917)

SS Ruperra was a British cargo ship of 4,232 tonnes, built in 1904 by Short Bros. Ltd., Sunderland. At the time of her loss, a century ago, she was owned by John Cory & Sons Ltd., Cardiff.

On 20 June 1917, Ruperra was travelling on a voyage from Port Sudan to London, with general cargo, when the steamer was targeted and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Gerhard Schulz. At the time, Ruperra was 50 miles south of Pantellaria Island.

Thankfully, there were no casualties.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
